PWK Pick of the Week

**This has ended for the summer.

If you hit the site late last night, you might have noticed a small change.  I have added the PWK Pick of the Week!  Every week (or two or three), I will change out our pick of the week!  This week, our pick is the new Pirates! Trolley tour.  Take a trolley ride, look for hidden treasure and learn how to tie a proper banadana!  We haven’t taken this tour yet, but we have heard it is very family friendly.  Although adult tickets will run you $20 a person, the child’s ticket is only $5!

If you take the Pirates! tour, come back here and let us know what you think.  If you have a spot or activity to suggest for the PWK Pick of the Week, send us a note through the Contact form!

Pensacola Friday Family Flicks 2011 Returns This Week!

What: Outdoor movies; Where: Palafox Pier; When: scheduled once a month; Cost: FREE

Friday Family Flicks returns to Downtown Pensacola this weekend.  Friday Family Flicks is a series of movies that are shown on an outdoor screen on Palafox Pier.  The movie schedule is as follows (movie titles are subject to change without prior notice):

  • May 20, 2011 – The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader PG
  • June 17, 2011 – Yogi Bear G
  • July 15, 2011 – Diary of a Wimpy Kid2: Rodrick Rules PG
  • August 19, 2011 – Rio G

You will want to arrive early enough to get a good seat.  That being said, we didn’t have any difficulties seeing the screen from a blanket on the ground.  The movie starts at dusk which is usually around 8pm.  There are various vendors that sell popcorn, drinks and other food.  We usually pack a picnic dinner or pick up dinner from one of our favorite restaurants and snack our way through the movie!

Chagall for Children

What: Chagall for Children Exhibit (hands-on learning about art!); Where: Pensacola Museum of Art; When: On loan from the Kohl Children’s Museum of Greater Chicago until September 4th; Museum is open Tues-Fri 10 to 5pm and Sat-Sun Noon to 5pm; Cost: Adults $5; Children under 5 Free; Discounts for students and active duty military; FREE Admission on Tuesdays

We made sure that we visited the Chagall for Children exhibit at the Pensacola Museum of Art during the Opening Reception.  We had a great time and the kids loved exploring the different parts of the exhibit.  Each exhibit activity is focused around a Chagall painting.  For example, for Job Tapestry, children can practice weaving on a large weaving screen.

We visited the museum with a friend and all four children worked for several minutes trying to create a tapestry of their own!  My daughter’s favorite part was the phone that was found at each station.  The phone plays a recording with information about many of the paintings.  Listening to the phone, she would exclaim different phrases she heard about the painting while pointing out what the recording was talking about.

We give this exhibit a big thumbs up and hope you will stop by!  The Pensacola Museum of Art offers free entry on Tuesdays but it does get crowded in the summer with day cares and group visits.

The Pensacola Museum of Art is located at 407 S. Jefferson Street and the contact number is 850-432-6247.

Welcome Southern Child Magazine Readers!

If you are stopping by from Southern Child Magazine, welcome to Pensacola with Kids and thanks for following the link.  A big hug and hello to all of our regular readers stopping by today, too!

I am so honored to have my first published article in Southern Child Magazine!  I love their mission of helping to place foster children in their forever homes and it is so awesome to be a tiny part of that.

If you are stopping by for the first time, please let me tell you a little bit about our site.  We are a resource to families of all kinds living in or visiting the Pensacola area.  We have been helping parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, sisters, brothers, friends, babysitters and more find family friendly activities in and around Pensacola for over two years.  We share our day trips and weekend trips to cities nearby as well.  On almost every Friday, we share a weekend roundup with family friendly events to attend.  We give park, restaurant, and activity reviews as well as share upcoming events.  We love to have guest posters join us as well!  If you have any questions, feel free to contact me and enjoy your visit!

If you are a regular Pensacola with Kids reader, I thank you for your loyal support.  I highly recommend you check out this month’s issue of Southern Child Magazine.  My article is in the Seeing the South section on pages 113-115 titled Pensacola with Kids.  There are some great articles in this issue!  If you are in the market for a stroller, see the Savvy Stroller guide where they reviewed a whole lot of strollers so you don’t have to!  There are Easter crafts and treats and a great article on teaching your children about sustainability.

UWF Festival on the Green

What: UWF Festival on the Green; Where: University of West Florida campus; When: April 1 and 2 (Children’s Festival April 2 from 10-2); Cost: FREE

Pensacola with Kids loves the Festival on the Green.  Not only are we both UWF alumni, but we like to wander around the campus and walk on the nature trails.  The Festival on the Green is a spring festival full of arts and crafts booths, multicultural performances and a children’s festival.  The schedule is packed full!!

The Festival on the Green is set for April 1 and 2.  The Children’s Festival is on Saturday, April 2.  There are booths were the children can do arts and crafts, play games, and other activities.  Big S’s favorite activity last year was when he got to cut up his own puzzle pieces from a block of wood.

The Festival on the Green is located on the University of West Florida campus.
