Blues on the Beach

It is time for the annual Blues on the Beach airshow!  I have to admit that in the 12 years I have lived in Pensacola, I have only gone one time.  I am a military brat so I prefer my airshows on a good hardy military base!  I also don’t like being stuck out in the hot sun for an extended period!  That being said, when we did go, we had a good time.  We camped at Ft. Picken’s (that is how long ago it was!) and watched the show from the water.  The Blues will be flying this weekend along the main beach.  According to a flyer at VisitPensacola the schedule is as follows:

Blues Practice – July 9 at 2:00 (The PNJ lists this activity as starting at 1:40pm).

Air Show Dress Rehearsal – July 10 at 10am (Blues fly at 2pm)

Air Show – July 11 at 10am (Blues fly at 2pm)

From all accounts, if you decide to head out to the Blue Angels Air Show on Saturday, you need to head out early and stake your space.  You need to plan on staying at the beach all day because it takes a long time to get the traffic moving and get back into town.  Bring lots of water to stay hydrated.  Like I said though, I am not speaking from experience at all…I don’t think we are going to brave the Saturday show this year either…my fair skinned boy and I will burn to a crisp if we have to stay at the beach all day!  We might try to head out to the practice tomorrow if all works out.  The Pensacola News Journal has an article with health, emergency, traffic, and water safety tips for the weekend.

Fourth of July Activities in Pensacola, Florida and surrounding areas

In past years, we have attended several different July 4th activities:  Pensacola Beach and the fireworks show downtown.  Here are a few links to some of the Fourth of July activities going on around our area:

Sertoma’s Fourth of July Celebration – Held in Old Seville Square, there are lots of great kid’s activities going on all day!  The fireworks will be held over Pensacola Bay.

Kaboom on Pensacola Beach - A three day even with concerts and fireworks!

Riverfest – I have heard nothing but great things about this activity and hope to make it someday!

Red, White, and Baytowne – Looking for a little roadtrip?  Head to Baytowne Wharf for their fireworks show.

Fireworks at Ft. Walton Beach Landing – Children’s activities, food and fireworks!

Fireworks at Destin Commons – Get some shopping done, let the kids play in the fountains and watch the fireworks!

Are there any other activities going on around town?  Please share the links in the comment section!

Quietwater Beach and Boardwalk, Pensacola, Florida

pcola1

When we were in college, Casino Beach was the place to see and be seen.  Now that I have given birth to two children, I just want to hide!  I have found the perfect place!  Quietwater Beach is great for the kids.  There are lots of families packed in under and around the pavilion.  It is just a few feet from the parking lot to where you will get settled on the beach. pcola2 The beach does not slope down very far the way it does in many other Pensacola Beach spots so you can get very close to the water without having to actually get in it.  It is very easy to keep an eye on the toddlers and children as they splash by the water’s edge and dig in the sand.  When the waves are crashing on the Gulf side, it is usually very calm here.  It is close to the Boardwalk where you will find some fun shops and yummy restaurants.  We love to walk to Surfburger for lunch after a long morning in the sun.  A couple of things that we have learned in our past few trips:

1.  Now that the hot weather is here, if you aren’t parked in the parking lot and parked on the beach by 9:30 or so you might want to find a different beach spot.  It gets crowded very quickly and the parking lot fills up.

2.  If you hate seagulls, you might want to find a different spot.  Children are often found throwing their leftover peanut butter to the seagulls.  This is not something I encourage my own children to do and considering my fear of birds (seriously!!!), it drives me nuts but it does happen and the birds wait to swoop in for any food droppings just like Fido might wait under your kitchen table.pcola

3.  This beach is not quiet!  There are lots of kids and families playing and making lots of noise.  Be prepared to make new friends when you pick a beach spot here!

4.  THERE ARE NO LIFEGUARDS STATIONED HERE. If I am wrong, please let me know by posting a comment or sending me an email.  The last few times we have been to this spot, I do not remember seeing lifeguards so you are SWIMMING AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Peg Leg Pete’s on Pensacola Beach

pegleg1-small-2Peg Leg Pete’s, on Pensacola Beach, is one of our favorite go to restaurants whenever someone comes in town to visit us.  We love sitting outside and enjoying the yummy seafood.  Seating is limited and Peg Leg’s is very popular all day long.  If you avoid peak times and are willing to sit inside, most of the time you can get seated immediately.  The meal is worth the wait though!  While you wait for a seat, let the kids run around on the great playground while you enjoy a soda or a cocktail.  Once you get seated inside or out, get ready to feast.  I love the peel and eat shrimp, Daddy J loves the blackened grouper sandwich, and Big S and Little S love the chicken fingers or grouper nuggets.  The kid’s meals come in their signature bright teal blue sand bucket that they get to keep.

Pensacola Beach Gulf Pier

If you are tired of heading to the beach to just sit on the sand, next time take a walk on the pier. The Pensacola Beach Gulf Pier is a 1471 foot long pier located on the main beach. It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Kids will enjoy walking out on the pier while trying to spot sea life. When the sun is in just the right spot, you might be able to spy rays, turtles, and fish. Watch the fishermen reel in their catch while you enjoy the sunset. Our kids especially enjoyed walking out to the end and realizing how far out they were!  Children under 6 are free and an adult ticket to walk the pier is $1.25.blogimg_0587-smallThe pier is located at 41 Fort Pickens Road, Pensacola, FL 32514.
