Pensacola Bay Brewery

What: Brewery Tour; Where: Downtown Pensacola; When: Open M-Thurs 11am-8pm, F-Sat 11am-10pm; Sun 12-6pm; Cost: Free tastings, Cream Soda, Rootbeer and Beer for purchase

When you think of the Pensacola Bay Brewery, throwing your kids in the car and heading down there for a visit might not be the first thing you would do.  But we did exactly that the other day and had a blast!  I have been wanting to stop by the Pensacola Bay Brewery since I heard it opened but haven’t been able to.  When we met our friends at Dolce, I realized that the brewery is located right next door so we walked over after our gelato date.  When we walked in with three children, they didn’t blink an eye (of course it was only 11am…we weren’t visiting at 8 o’clock at night!)!

The little ones were able to try their Cannonball Rootbeer and they also have Doubloon Cream Soda.

Cannonball Rootbeer

I asked if children were welcome (as my child sat next to me!) to visit and tour.  They said absolutely.  The Pensacola Bay Brewery has tours scheduled every Saturday afternoon on the hour.  They also set up group tours in advance.  We are advocates of factory tours and learning how things are made so I will probably bring my school aged son back one weekend.

Things to Know Before You Go:

  • They only take cash or check but do have an ATM on site.
  • If I visit with the family again, I will visit during their early afternoon hours when it isn’t very crowded.
  • If you want to tour, be sure to call ahead to confirm they are doing tours that day.  Tours are sometimes cancelled due to where they are in the brewing process.

Dolce – Downtown Pensacola

On my very favorite street downtown, across from the Old Christ Church you will find a tiny little cafe named Dolce.  It has been open for a few months serving gelato, coffee, and handmade candies.  It is in what was originally the shotgun home known as the Moreno Cottage and is part of Historic Pensacola.  According to Film North Florida, the Moreno Cottage was part of a family compound and was built in 1870.

Dolce sells handmade chocolates, specialty coffees, and gelato.

After taste testing a few flavors, Little S decided on the vanilla gelato.  She is picky about her ice cream treats but she ate every bite!

Things to Do Before You Know:

  • Our group leader set up the visit and we were told to bring cash.  I am not sure if they take credit cards because I forgot to ask!
  • Call ahead to confirm the hours they are open before you make the trip.
  • While you are at Dolce in the historic area, wander around, take a tour, or visit the Pensacola Bay Brewery next door (I will be telling you about our visit to the brewery later this week!).

Chili’s Kids Eat FREEbruary

If you are on Chili’s email list, you will have already received information about this Chili’s promotion.  On February 8, 15, 21, and 22, kids age 12 & under eat free at Chili’s with the purchase of an adult meal.

Thanks A. and N. for the information!  As always, PWK recommends that you call ahead if you are counting on the free meal to make sure that your store is participating.

Cupcake Emporium – Pensacola, Florida

Cupcake stores have been popular up north and over on the East Coast for quite some time but we have only recently seen the popularity popping up here.  They are easy, less messy than a cake, and they are just as tasty.

Cupcake Emporium is hard to miss…or at least is was when I went last week.  They may have a sign up now, but don’t be worried if you don’t see one.  They are open for business!  They have lots of big, yummy cupcakes ready for purchase to eat there or to take to go.

We tried four different cupcakes: pumpkin spice; mint chocolate; double chocolate; and the vanilla cupcake (vanilla cupcake and vanilla icing).

Our verdict?  They were all pretty tasty but both the kids loved the icing the best and stuck to digging their fingers into the icing.  Our box of cupcakes looked like a little rat had gotten into it and chowed down!  I think the double chocolate cupcake was the biggest hit.  The chocolate mint cupcake was fabulous and probably my favorite but VERY strong in the mint department.  If I were to get chocolate mint again, I would ask for it to be put in a separate box so as not to cover the other cupcakes with its delicious mint flavor!

The cupcakes are around $2.75 a piece.  Cupcake Emporium is located in the small shopping strip with Baskin Robbins off of Bayou Blvd.  It would be a perfect stop after a long morning of shopping at the mall!

Sweet Memories Ice Cream – Pace, Florida

***Sweet Memories is permanently closed.

**Sweet Memories is under new management and not only are they offering an array of ice cream flavors now but they are also serving cupcakes!  Visit them at their new Facebook Page.**

We often get emails from readers and business owners alike telling us about new (and old favorites) things to do in and around Pensacola.  Sometimes, we might never have heard about a great place without your emails so we thank you!  I received an email from someone from Sweet Memories Ice Cream shop and it got tucked away for a visit when we were out that way.  The ice cream shop is located in Pace and I am not!  When my friend and I headed out to check out the Holland Peanut Farms Pumpkin Patch at the beginning of October, we drove past Sweet Memories and the sign caught my eye.  As we drove past it, I remembered that it was on my list of places to visit so we decided to stop on our way back and have ice cream for lunch!  I promise I fed my child her real lunch when we got home!

They serve Edy’s ice cream, which you can certainly buy at a store, but it is definitely not as tasty!  I had a mint chocolate chip sundae that had mint chocolate chip ice cream, hot fudge, mint cookies, and whipped cream.  Both of the kids had Birthday Cake ice cream which was surprisingly delicious.  My friend had the Strawberry Cheesecake sundae.  Yum…ready to head over there right now?!

We were greeted as soon as we opened the door and were served quickly.  I was happy to find that the ice cream was reasonably priced.  We sat on the front porch and enjoyed our ice cream while the kids ran around.

If you are in Pace and craving some ice cream, Sweet Memories is definitely worth a stop!

Sweet Memories is located at 4458 Woodbine Road, Pace, Florida and their contact number is 850.995.4999.

Pensacola Seafood Festival – September 24-26

The Pensacola Seafood Festival is one of our favorite festivals to attend in Pensacola.  I love the smell of seafood frying and boiling, the sound of the bands playing, and the bright colors of the arts and crafts spilling out of the vendor booths.  The Seafood Festival has activities for children as well.  They will love watching the Splash Dog Competition where dogs compete to jump the farthest in a pool of water.  There are also other free and cost friendly activities like inflatables, rock climbing wall and a bubble tower.

According to the website, the children’s activities will be open Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The Seafood Festival hours will be Friday, September 24 – 11 a.m. to 11 p.m; Saturday, September 25 – 10 a.m. to 11 p.m; Sunday, September 26 – 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

So this picture wasn’t taken at the actual location (because unfortunately I left my memory card at home), but do you know where this cupcake came from?  You might have heard the buzz about this particular place but if you haven’t and you love cupcakes, you will be so happy to read tomorrow’s post!

We hope you will play along.  If you know where this cupcake came from, leave a comment in this post!
