Dolce – Downtown Pensacola

On my very favorite street downtown, across from the Old Christ Church you will find a tiny little cafe named Dolce.  It has been open for a few months serving gelato, coffee, and handmade candies.  It is in what was originally the shotgun home known as the Moreno Cottage and is part of Historic Pensacola.  According to Film North Florida, the Moreno Cottage was part of a family compound and was built in 1870.

Dolce sells handmade chocolates, specialty coffees, and gelato.

After taste testing a few flavors, Little S decided on the vanilla gelato.  She is picky about her ice cream treats but she ate every bite!

Things to Do Before You Know:

  • Our group leader set up the visit and we were told to bring cash.  I am not sure if they take credit cards because I forgot to ask!
  • Call ahead to confirm the hours they are open before you make the trip.
  • While you are at Dolce in the historic area, wander around, take a tour, or visit the Pensacola Bay Brewery next door (I will be telling you about our visit to the brewery later this week!).

Pensacola Pelican Drop

What: New Year’s celebration; When: New Year’s Eve; Where: Downtown Pensacola; Cost: FREE

The Pensacola Pelican Drop is an annual Pensacola celebration to ring in the new year.  From 5pm-8pm, many of the activities are family oriented with the Children’s Pelican Celebration.  At 8pm, the pelican will light up and rise to the spot where it will wait until the midnight countdown.  There will be live music, a bubble stomp, and fireworks (at midnight).  This event will draw many people to downtown.  According to the website, they are expecting over 50,000 people in attendance.

We have not attended this event because we are usually stay home with the kids on New Year’s Eve so we don’t have any tips for this event.  Check out the Tips page on the Pensacola Pelican Drop website before you head downtown.  If you have been in previous years and have tips or advice for going with your children, please leave us a comment.

Winterfest 2010

On the Friday after Thanksgiving, my mom picked up the kids for an extra special treat and they went downtown for Winterfest 2010.  They took the Performance Tour which is a 60m trolley tour that makes 12 stops including The Polar Express, the Grinch, Rudolph and Elvis.  When my kids got home, they ran in the door to tell me all about Santa and the Grinch.  Those were their two favorite parts.  There are several tour options and they vary in price: the Performance Tour, Rudolph’s Tour, and Santa’s Express (a shorter tour available the week before Christmas).

The Rudolph Revue is a musical performance that is free to the public and held twice a night on Performance Tour nights.  You can also get your picture with Santa and grab a cup of hot chocolate or some dessert while you are there.

Things to Know Before You Go:

Here are a few things that Grandma wanted to share:

  • Arrive in enough time to allow for finding a spot to park (we were very conveniently across the street from the Courthouse), and make a trip to the restrooms inside the Courthouse. They start loading 10 minutes before your assigned time.
  • Dress warmly … they served hot chocolate and gave us blankets, but everyone needs a jacket, gloves and a hat. Even with the temperatures just dropping down into the 60s it was chilly with the wind. We were in an open vehicle.
  • Before or after your ride, take a walk to the right side of the steps (when you’re facing the Courthouse) … the large lighted tree is the perfect spot for pictures and Santa is waiting just beyond the tree to listen to wish lists.
  • They have a food cart set up farther down to the right serving chili, baked potatoes, etc.

Visit the Winterfest website for times and dates.  You can also purchase tickets online.

Pensacola Trolley Tours

Please welcome Mandy, my friend and fellow blogger, today.  First, I have to apologize to Mandy because she sent me this guest post awhile back and it has taken me forever to get it on the site!  I promise it won’t happen again!  Mandy invited me to come along with her on a Pensacola trolley tour but unfortunately I wasn’t able to make it so I asked her to do a guest post for me.  Mandy is an advocate of being a tourist in her own town and I love to join her on her adventures.  Be sure to stop by her blog Mandy’s Life After 30 where she blogs about life, being a mom, cooking (she is even writing a cookbook that I can’t wait to get my hands on!), and anything else you can think of!  Welcome, Mandy!

Boats docked by Joe Patti's

Can you believe that Pensacola was once the red snapper fish capital of the world?  Did you know that the U.S. President and his entire Whitehouse staff receive their paychecks from our city?  – The money is processed, signed and printed right here at NAS!   These are just a few fun facts that I learned recently on the Pensacola Trolley Tour

Whether you are a newcomer to the area like me or a long-time resident, I recommend you ride aboard this fun trolley excursion.  While you sit inside a replica of an 1880’s streetcar, you’ll gain rich history and see beautiful architecture of this community.  The tour lasts just over an hour and makes one stop at Joe Patti’s Fish Market.  At the market place, tour goers receive a free cup of gelato or a free slice of bread, depending upon the time of year.

Highlights of the tour include viewing places like the L & N passenger depot, Historic Pensacola Village, the Don Tristan de Luna expedition landing and other historic sites within downtown’s boundaries.   The tour is narrated partly by a recording and partly by the trolley driver, covering nearly 450 years of Pensacola’s past.   The guide encourages questions and photos from passengers.

Here are a few points about the tour:

  • This is a trolley replica of an 1880’s streetcar. Therefore, there are no seatbelts or safety devices in this vehicle.  Keep this in mind if you’re planning to bring children along with you.  This might be a tour better suited for school-aged kids who can sit still for an hour and who will appreciate the stories behind the historic monuments.
  • The trolley does not have air conditioning so please consider that during the summer months and dress accordingly.  You do, however, feel a breeze from the windows being partly opened.  Plus the stop at Joe Patti’s helps cool you off in the Florida humidity.
  • The tour accepts cash only so do not bring your checks or credit cards.  You will be told this when you call to make your reservation.

The Pensacola trolley tours are currently in operation seven days a week.  The session begins and ends at the Welcome Center located at the Pensacola Area Convention and Visitors Information Center, 1401 E Gregory St at the foot of 3-mile Pensacola/Gulf Breeze bridge. Current tour times listed are 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.  The prices are $16 for adults, $15 for students, seniors and active military and $8 for children twelve years old and younger.  However, please call to verify times and prices before you attend.  Reservations are recommended, (850) 941-4363.

Note:  The Pensacola Trolley Tours just left a note on our Facebook page saying that they are “open on Thanksgiving Day, with tours at 11am and 1pm. Before you stuff yourself on turkey, come take a ride with us and enjoy the beauty & history of downtown Pensacola. Bring the family! Call for advance reservations: 850-941-4363.”

Bayfront Sundays schedule for October 24

The second Bayfront Sunday has been scheduled for October 24.  From 8am to 5pm, Bayfront Parkway between Chase and Tarragona will be open to pedestrian and bicycle traffic only.  They had one of these during the summer but it was very hot.  If you love the idea of being able to stroll along Bayfront Parkway with your family, please make sure to visit as attendance will determine whether or not the city holds another Bayfront Sunday.   Grab your skateboard, bike or walking shoes and head out there for a fun family day!  Visit Megan Pratt’s blog for more information.
