Eastern Shore Center – Spanish Fort, Alabama

This post is the last in a series of Day Trip to Mobile, Alabama posts.  See the other places that we visited:  Gulf Coast Exploreum, Fort Conde, USS Alabama and Bass Pro Shops

The Eastern Shore Center is a great shopping center.  There are stores for everyone in the family, great restaurants, and our personal favorite-a splash pad!  When we went to this splash pad it was packed.    The Eastern Shore has lots of great family friendly activities.  They allow birthday parties at the splash pad, they show free movies at the fountain, and they are having a Safe Kid’s Day on Friday during Alabama’s Tax Free Week.  Remember their swimsuits, a change of clothes, sunscreen and a towel.  The splash pad is a great place for the parents to relax while the kids run off some steam.

We have had a love/hate relationship with Bass Pro Shops ever since my husband started doing some major hiking.  Every time he schedules a new Appalachian Trail hike, we schedule a visit to the Bass Pro.  I love to visit the store…I hate the amount of money the store is able to pull from my wallet!  Bass Pro is a great store to take the kids to.  If you need an item that relates to the great outdoors, they probably have in stock!  The store is HUGE!  Not only are there all sorts of fun things to test out before you buy but there is a humongous fish tank in the back of the store with a variety of very large (are you sensing a big theme here?!) fish swimming.  You can check out the aquarium and then head to the 2nd floor where there is an arcade game.  You could spend hours in this place!

Bass Pro Shop also has a ton of kid-oriented activities.  At Christmastime, you can do a craft and sit on Santa’s lap.  At Easter, they had an egg hunt.  Check the schedule for their events, workshops, and food tastings!

USS Alabama – Mobile, Alabama

This post is part of a series of Day Trip to Mobile, Alabama posts.  See the other places that we visited:  Gulf Coast Exploreum and Fort Conde.

After visiting the Exploreum and Fort Conde, we drove to Battleship Memorial Park where the USS Alabama rests.  Admission is a little pricey (but well worth it) so after spending money at the Exploreum, we decided to skip the actual tour of the USS Alabama.  It was also packed when we arrived!  We plan on visiting the battleship next time we go to Mobile.  Entrance into the parking is $2.00 a car.  Admission to the USS Alabama is $12.00 for 12 years and older, $6.00 for 6-12 year olds and it is free for 5 and under.  Tours are self-guided and the website recommends that you plan on spending approximately 2 hours on your visit.  Bring a picnic and have lunch in the park!

Back to School Tax Free Weekend in Alabama

Unfortunately for the second year in a row, Florida will not be participating in a tax free week this year.  Alabama, however, is!  In keeping with our Mobile, AL themed posts this week, I thought that I would let you know that Tax Free Weekend is August 7-9th.  I checked the list to see which local governments have notified the Alabama Department of Revenue and it looks like both Spanish Fort and Foley are participating.  This means that you can check out the Tanger Outlets in Foley or hit the Eastern Shore Center in Spanish Fort and get tax free shopping.  There are some limitations though as to what items qualify and how much you can purchase to qualify for tax free.  Check the Department of Revenue website to see what qualifies and as always, call ahead to make sure the information is still accurate and current!

Fort Conde – Mobile, Alabama

Over the weekend my family took a day trip to Mobile, Alabama.  Over the next few days, I will be posting the different things that we did.  See the first post about the Gulf Coast Exploreum here.

The parking lot that we chose to park in was right across the street from Fort Conde so after visiting the Gulf Coast Exploreum, we went into Fort Conde.  Admission is free and there is a small visitor center in the fort where you can pick up information for all kinds of activities in Mobile.  According to the website, the fort that you can explore is only about “1/3 of the original fort recreated in 4/5-scale.”  The majority of the fort was removed since there was no more need for the defense.  This fort is funny because the cannons are all aimed at high rise buildings now and Interstate 10 runs right under it!

Even though most of it is gone now and the city has built up all around it, you can still get a feel for what life was like back then by exploring the various rooms of the forts.  The rooms have examples of how they might have looked, with period dress and various other remnants from that time period.

You will see storage rooms, bedrooms, and a spot where they kept the prisoners.

The kids will love to check out all the little hidey holes and the cannons on the second level.

The fort is located on 150 South Royal Street.  If you park in the public parking lot across the street, it is just a short walk to the Exploreum and other Mobile sites.

The Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center – Mobile, Alabama

This past weekend, my family and I took a road trip to Mobile.  It is about a 45 minute drive from Pensacola, so it is a perfect spot for a day trip.  Over the next week or so, I will post the activities that we did while we were there.

The first place that we stopped was the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center.  The Exploreum is a great place to take your kids and help promote their love (or mild like!) of science.  One of the current exhibits is My Body Works and is a great interactive exhibit.

mobiletrip1-medium

When you first arrive, you get a little card that you plug into a bunch of the machines and it records data on things like how much blood you have in your body, how far you can stretch, how high you can jump, etc.  When you have completed all of the activities, you plug the card into a computer and a personal health profile is given to you.  Big S really liked the room where you could simulate laproscopic surgery.  He was pretty good at it!  We did several of the activities, but unfortunately it was so crowded, that we decided to skip the rest of it.  My kids were getting anxious so we moved on.  The next exhibit we stopped at were the Hands on and Minds on Halls.

There are tons of hands-on activities and you could spend quite some time here.  The kids loved the dancing magnets, the pulley machine seats, the shadow wall, and the weighted wheel race.  They also enjoyed playing DJ, playing the laser harp, and pretending to be on TV in the WKRG newsroom!

In the same area is the Wharf of Wonder which features a ship, a ball pit ocean, a little wharf with a fish shop.  there are also little tables with building blocks and computers set up here.  The Wharf of Wonder is for children from ages 0-5.

There are all kinds of camps in summer and I saw a flyer posted for preschool activities during the upcoming school year.  Check the website before you go so that you know what exhibit is going on.  We are super excited for the upcoming Bob the Builder exhibit that will begin in October and run through January.

Helpful Hints:

  • Right now, they are running a special where adults get in for children’s price on Sundays.  This special will be running through August 30th.
  • For my family of four to visit, it cost us $32 (it would have been $36 but we went on a Sunday and were able to buy adult tickets at children’s prices).  For only $100, your family can become members of the Exploreum.  Members benefit from free admission to all permanent exhibits and discounted tickets to blockbuster exhibits and IMAX movies.  If we were going to go more than three or four times a year, I would definitely buy a membership.  If you travel a lot, the membership does have reciprocity with over 270 other museums and science centers in the United States.  There is also an option called the mini membership.  For $50, it includes admission to permanent exhibits for one adult and two children.
  •   The current IMAX movies showing are Mummies, The Living Sea, and Journey into Amazing Caves.  The upcoming IMAX films are NASCAR, Animalopolis, The Light Before Christmas, and Dinosaurs.  All seven of these are different from the four currently showing at the Naval Aviation Museum, home of our local IMAX.
  • If you have children ages 0-5, you will receive a WOW sticker when you purchase your tickets.  This is not some cute little sticker that says WOW on it.  We were not informed at time of purchase that this sticker is the entrance into the Wharf Of Wonder!!  Luckily, my son had his sticker so both children were able to play.
  • Plan on about 1.5-2.5 hours for a visit in the Exploreum.  You can definitely finish in less time or spend even longer there depending on the pace of your children, but if they experience everything and then see an IMAX, this time should be sufficient.

Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival — Foley, Alabama

ballon2

This year marks the fifth anniversary of the Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival in Foley, Alabama.  The festival kicks off Thursday night, June 18 and ends Sunday, June 21.  The festival is held at the Foley Soccer Complex and if your kids are fascinated with flight, it is worth the hour or so drive that it will take you to get there.  If you need another good excuse, it is right next to the Tanger Outlets.

Last summer, we made the drive to Foley at the last minute.  We had talked about taking the kids, but the weather was so bad that we were afraid it would rain once we got there.  It was a beautiful evening!  The Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival is very kid-friendly.  There are hot air balloons all over the grounds.

We went at night and it was absolutely amazing to see the balloons all lit up.  You can take a tethered hot air balloon ride in the evenings.  Last year these were free, but the lines were lengthy.  Most of the balloon operators did pass out tickets so make sure you don’t have to do anything before you get in line.

There is entertainment all day long — great bands, the K9 Frisbee Team, fireworks, arts and crafts.  There are so many activities for the kids!  Besides watching the balloons fly through the air, there is a Children’s Village where the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, Alligator Alley, Dr. Gee the Balloon Guy, and Gertie the Clown will be hanging out.  Check out the schedule to make sure that you don’t miss anything!
