Things to Know Before You Go:

  • Check, recheck and triple check the dates and times to make sure they are still correct when the egg hunt gets closer.  As I always say, this information comes from word of mouth, press releases and flyers I see around town.  The information is not always correct and I am human and make mistakes sometimes (although I try not to do it very often :-) !).  Follow the link and be sure to contact the number available to confirm the time.
  • Bring a basket or bag of your own.
  • Arrive early.  We went to an egg hunt two years ago at the John R. Jones park.  The egg hunt was over in less than 3 minutes.  There were hundreds (probably thousands) of eggs picked up and my two children got a whopping 3 eggs between the two of them.  They were young and were just thrilled with the excitement of it all so luckily they weren’t disappointed.  However, if we had arrived 30 seconds later we would have missed the whole thing.
  • Hide a couple of prefilled eggs in your car before you go.  Now that my son is a year older, I foresee some serious disappointment if he only gets one egg.  I would throw a couple in the car and have them hunt for them when we were all finished.  Of course, in my car every day is an egg hunt except you never know what you might find!  HA!

Do you know of any other egg hunts that the community is invited to?  If so, leave a comment in this post with the information.  Any names or numbers not in an official capacity will be deleted for safety reasons.

The 2011 Great Backyard Bird Count

The Great Backyard Bird Count begins tomorrow, February 18 and goes through February 21.  The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual event that “engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent. Anyone can participate, from beginning bird watchers to experts.”

This is a great way to get the kids outside (especially in this beautiful weather!) to practice their counting and colors!  Participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count is very easy.  You will count birds for at least fifteen minutes a day, on one or more days during the time period.  You will count the greatest number of individuals of each species that you see together at any one time.  When you are all finished, you head to the website and enter your results.

Visit the Great Backyard Bird Count website for more details on how to count the birds you see.  While on the website, you can download a Data Form to help you keep track of your count.  You can also download Printable Tally Sheets for your area.  These sheets will include the birds that are native to our area by your zip code, town, or national park.

There is also a great kid’s section on the website.  There are coloring sheets, puzzles, and bookmarks.

Seasonal Planetarium Show at Pensacola State College

I have not been to the Planetarium to see the show so I can’t vouch for which age group it would be appropriate but it says it is appropriate for all ages.  I can tell you that many of my friends have been to other shows at the Planetarium and enjoyed them.  We were supposed to attend the 12/1 showing but in a bizarre twist of events…literally…I broke my foot (again) that morning so we weren’t able to go.  Below is the information that was sent to me

The Pensacola State College Planetarium will be presenting a holiday program entitled Season of Light beginning  Monday 11/22 through Wednesday 12/15 as noted in the schedule below.  The show is presented in full-dome HD and lasts about 35 minutes.  The show will be followed by a brief (10 to 15 min) night-sky presentation.

You must purchase admission at the Ashmore Auditorium ticket office in Building 8, prior to the show.  Tickets may be purchased in person or by telephone (484-1847).  There are no reservations and seating is on a first come – first seated basis.  Please note that tickets cannot be purchased at the Planetarium. You may find a campus map on the planetarium website: http://planetarium.pensacolastate.edu . Admission is $5.50 for adults, $4.50 for students, and $3.50 for preschool.

Show Description

Season of Light is an elegant program about the coldest and darkest of seasons — a time which holds some of the warmest and brightest celebrations of the year.  This presentation traces the history and development of many of the world’s most endearing holiday customs, all of which involve lighting up the winter season.  The show also recounts the historical religious and cultural rituals practiced during the time of winter solstice — not only Christian and Jewish, but also Celtic, Nordic, Roman, Irish, Mexican and Hopi.  Naturally, there is some astronomy in Season of Light.  Audiences learn a selection of Northern hemisphere winter constellations, and learn the reasons behind the seasons, as we demonstrate the Sun’s path across the sky throughout the year, and the Earth’s tilt and orbit around the Sun. Season of Light is appropriate for all ages. More information about the show can be found on the Planetarium website: http://planetarium.pensacolastate.edu

Winterfest 2010

On the Friday after Thanksgiving, my mom picked up the kids for an extra special treat and they went downtown for Winterfest 2010.  They took the Performance Tour which is a 60m trolley tour that makes 12 stops including The Polar Express, the Grinch, Rudolph and Elvis.  When my kids got home, they ran in the door to tell me all about Santa and the Grinch.  Those were their two favorite parts.  There are several tour options and they vary in price: the Performance Tour, Rudolph’s Tour, and Santa’s Express (a shorter tour available the week before Christmas).

The Rudolph Revue is a musical performance that is free to the public and held twice a night on Performance Tour nights.  You can also get your picture with Santa and grab a cup of hot chocolate or some dessert while you are there.

Things to Know Before You Go:

Here are a few things that Grandma wanted to share:

  • Arrive in enough time to allow for finding a spot to park (we were very conveniently across the street from the Courthouse), and make a trip to the restrooms inside the Courthouse. They start loading 10 minutes before your assigned time.
  • Dress warmly … they served hot chocolate and gave us blankets, but everyone needs a jacket, gloves and a hat. Even with the temperatures just dropping down into the 60s it was chilly with the wind. We were in an open vehicle.
  • Before or after your ride, take a walk to the right side of the steps (when you’re facing the Courthouse) … the large lighted tree is the perfect spot for pictures and Santa is waiting just beyond the tree to listen to wish lists.
  • They have a food cart set up farther down to the right serving chili, baked potatoes, etc.

Visit the Winterfest website for times and dates.  You can also purchase tickets online.

Snow in the South – Foley, Alabama – Let it Snow

On December 4th, it will snow in Foley, Alabama!  Well, it won’t really snow but it will be the next best thing!  Let it Snow is a holiday celebration at Foley Heritage Park held on December 4th from 11 to 3.    Admission is free.  There will be snow, games, prizes, food, and entertainment.

We went to this event last year and had so much fun.  The snow is actually big ice blocks that they blow into a fenced off area.  Last year they had separate play times for the different age groups.  The little children got to go first and then they gradually let older children play.  It was pretty icy and once it became a free for all the snow area was pretty chaotic.

Things to Know Before You Go:

  • Wear tennis shoes or shoes with some sort of grip on them.  After a little while, the ice gets muddy (especially if it stays as warm as it has been!) and slippery.
  • Throw an extra set of clothes in the car so the ride home won’t be a soggy and uncomfortable one.
  • Make a day of it!  The trip from Pensacola to Foley will take a little while so make a day trip of it.  Visit the Train Depot Museum (which is located adjacent to the Let it Snow event), stop at the Tanger Outlets, or watch the Foley Christmas Parade which is the same day.
