All New Kids Eat FREE (or cheap) in Pensacola Listing!

One of the things I have been wanting to put together for our readers was an updated list of area restaurants where kids eat free or with a deep discount.  Below are the restaurants that have programs for the kids. I called and confirmed each one. ****As always, we recommend that you call ahead to confirm that the promotion is still being run and that the times and dates are correct (especially if you are like us and are counting on that discount!). If you find out about any other restaurants that have hot deals for kids, please comment or send an email to Julie at Pensacolawithkids dot com.  We will confirm with a phone call and update the list. If you know that any of this information is inaccurate, please let us know. We will be continuously updating this list.

Kaleidoscope Associates Cooking Classes for Kids at Distinctive Kitchens

At Christmastime, we were thrilled to be invited to a Distinctive Kitchens cooking class. My son and I spent two days, a Friday evening and a Saturday morning, putting together a gigantic gingerbread house. During the first part of the class, we made gingerbread cookies and put together our gingerbread house. While we worked, the instructor told us stories about gingerbread and how to make our own perfect gingerbread.

Each parent/child pair got to make a cookie sheet full of gingerbread cookies. I am not a huge fan of gingerbread but when these cookies came piping hot out of the oven, I couldn’t help but try one. They were absolutely delicious.

After making gingerbread cookies, we learned how to put together our gingerbread house. The instructor worked step-by-step to make sure that we had a stable house held together with Royal Icing. After we knew our house was not going to crumble, we left it to dry overnight.

The next morning, we returned to Distinctive Kitchens to decorate our house. Big S and I spent three hours covering our house with more frosting and all of our favorite candies.

Our house wasn’t the prettiest, but we were pretty happy with it!

Kaleidoscope Associates offers a number of cooking classes for children of all ages. There are family classes as well as classes that are children only. Summer and spring break camps are also available.

Register now for summer camps, Preschool Chefs, and the Mother’s Day Lunch. On May 12th, you can drop your child off to learn how to cook a special lunch just for you. When they are finished (and you have enjoyed wandering downtown on your own), join your child for lunch! The fee is $45 for one adult and up to two children.

*Thank you to Kaleidescope Associates for hosting us at the cooking class. As always, opinions are mine and mine alone (well, with some input from Big S on this one!).

TCBY – 9 Mile Road

It is ridiculous that it has taken me so long to write about one of our more recent favorite spots to grab a sweet treat!  The TCBY on 9 Mile Road opened up during the summer and the cooler temperatures don’t seem to be keeping people away because every time we go in there, there is a crowd.

This TCBY is a self-serve yogurt shop located in the Target shopping center on 9 Mile Road and University Parkway.  When you walk in, employees will help you sample any and all flavors before you make your choice and serve it up in a bowl.  There are a number of flavors to choose from on any given day and they range from run of the mill like vanilla and chocolate to more interesting flavors like strawberry kiwi, mountain blackberry and birthday cake.

After you have chosen your desired flavor, you can choose from a number of toppings like fruits, candies, and syrups.  When you are all finished, you take it to the cash register to weigh it and you pay by the ounce.

You can take your frozen yogurt to go but my kids love to sit in the fun, brightly-colored chairs and couches.

I knew that we had visited too often when we walked in after several visits and the young employee remembered that my daughter liked pink colored yogurt!  She was excited we came in for a visit because they had just gotten in a new yogurt flavor that was colored pink!  Little S was thrilled!

TCBY offers a loyalty card and after you collect a certain number of points, you get a few ounces of yogurt for free.  Be sure to get one when you go in for the first time and then register it online so that you can collect your points.

Things to Know Before You Go:

  • Like other self-serve yogurt bars, be careful as too how much you fill your cup.  The cups are large and can be deceiving!
  • Though I did see some cones while I was there last time, as far as I know, this TCBY is not participating in Waffle Cone Wednesday.
  • You can use your loyalty card before you register it online but you can’t collect your free yogurt points until it has been registered.

Berry Yogurt

What: frozen yogurt; Where: 6301 N. 9th Ave; When: Mon-Thurs 11am-10pm; Fri-Sat 11am-11pm

We saw the sign go up in front of the building and we had a feeling it would be a frozen yogurt place but we weren’t certain until we saw the newspaper article about it.  Berry Yogurt is a fun frozen yogurt shop off of Tippin and 9thAvenue in the same shopping center as Innerlight.  The yogurt is self-serve and sold by the ounce.  If you have never been, the staff will help you figure out what to do.  You grab a cup, fill it with your desired flavor and toppings, then the cashier will weigh it and give you your total.

The cups are large, which can sometimes be deceiving when you fill them up.  The first time we went, I put way too much yogurt in the kids’ cups and the little one had a hard time finishing it.  There are a number of different toppings and I love that there are all sorts of different yogurt flavors.  You can mix and match whatever you would like to make your own perfect creation.  Not only are there a lot of choices but the choices include things like coconut, green tea, and blueberry tart.  I have firsthand knowledge that the blueberry tart is absolutely divine…not that I have eaten it on three separate trips…really, I promise.

The inside of Berry Yogurt is brightly decorated with fun tables and chairs and there is a ping pong table off to one side.

Berry Yogurt is open Monday through Thursday from 11am to 10pm and Friday and Saturday from 11am to 11pm.  Connect with them on Facebook to keep up to date with the daily flavors and giveaways.

First Day of School Tradition – A Special Treat

Do you have any first day of school traditions?  On the first day of Kindergarten, we went to grab some ice cream afterwards and every year since so we have officially made it our first day of school tradition.  We eat pretty healthy around here but if you follow PWK you know that I love our little treats!  Here are some places to grab a special treat to celebrate the success of a first day of school!

TCBY – There are two locations – one at Bayou and one at 9 Mile Road.  We visited the new 9 Mile Road store and had yummy yogurt and fun family time this weekend.  This just might be where we end up this afternoon!  You could also try Baskin Robbins or Dolce!

Oh Snap! Cupcakes or the Cupcake Emporium – If you would rather have a cupcake, try one of these spots!

Krispy Kreme or Dunkin’ Donuts – Grab a donut for the kids and enjoy a cup of coffee to keep you going for the rest of day.

How do you celebrate the first day?  I hope that everyone had a smooth first day of school!

Pensacola Snow

*Pensacola Snow is no longer in business.

What: New Orleans Style Snowcones; Where: 937 Creigton Rd in the red food truck; When: Hours vary; Cost: Prices begin around $2

Pensacola Snow is a bright red food truck that serves up New Orleans Style snowballs.  We stopped by at the beginning of the summer but I didn’t post about it because they announced that they were moving locations.  I stopped by their Facebook page the other day and saw that as of July 5th, they will be stationed at 937 Creighton Road next to Louisiana Crawfish Sales.

The Pensacola snowcones are an icy, tasty treat for a hot summer day.  When we went, there were six of us and we tried six different flavors (my favorite was banana!).  The hours listed on the Pensacola Snow Facebook page are Tuesday-Saturday from 12noon to 7pm and Sunday 12noon to 5pm.  I recommend checking the Facebook page before you go because sometimes they post new hours for the day.

If you make it to Pensacola Snow, cross it off of your 55 Days of Summer in Pensacola list!

National Doughnut Day – Free Doughnuts!

Celebrate National Doughnut Day on Friday, June 3rd, with a free doughnut at participating Krispy Kreme or Dunkin’ Donuts (I have not called to see if our local stores are participating yet.  If you know, please let us know!).  Dunkin’ Donuts will give one free donut with a beverage purchase and Krispy Kreme has no purchase necessary according to their press release.

Feed the “Moe-ment” with Moe’s Giveaway

Moe’s is one of my husband’s favorite grab-a-quick-bite-to-eat meals so when I was offered a chance to participate in a giveaway, I jumped at the chance!  As the mom and nutritional counter of this family, I love that Moe’s newly unveiled menu and Food Mission Wheel gives so many different food options.

Moe’s is on a food mission to help their customers easily choose healthy choices from their low-calorie menu which has meals that are less than 450 calories.  There are even vegetarian choices like their organic tofu and their veggies are prepared on a grill that is separate from the meat products.  We love that Moe’s offers gluten free choices, too.  Any restaurant that makes feeding an entire family with different needs much easier is a great restaurant in my book!

My kids both love the rice bowls that we buy them, Daddy J always gets the same burrito while I often try new things whenever I go like tacos, nachos and salads.

And now, one lucky reader will get a chance to try out their new menu because Moe’s has given me a $25 gift card to give away!
