Disney on Ice at the Pensacola Bay Center

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to win 4 tickets to tonight’s performance of Disney on Ice at the Pensacola Bay Center.  I was at a fundraiser for the LEAP Trail (which is a really neat thing for our city.  You can check out the details here and our very own Jennifer Harrison is a member of Pensacola LEAP 2013!) and had the winning bid on a great package that included the tickets.  My daughter’s 3rd birthday was yesterday and to say that she loves all the Disney Princesses would be the understatement of the year.  So, I figured what the heck?  LEAP Trail is a great thing to give money to and my baby girl would have a ball!

I have to say that I was seriously impressed with the show.  Having really young kids, this was my first time and this type of show that is clearly geared toward the younger set.  I expected something much more cheesy and frankly, with a lot less talent.  I was wrong!  This is a wonderful production with seriously talented ice skaters, beautiful sets and costumes, and great production value.  There are 3 performances left and I highly recommend it, if you have young kids who are big fans of Disney.  Tickets range from $17-$52 and all the info is here.  I think we were in the $30 seats and they were just fine.  Honestly, for this type of show, there isn’t a bad seat in the house.

They open things with a cute “cast warm-up” that encourages the audience to get up and move around and it’s led by The Incredibles.   It was fun and very cute, although we opted to stay seated since we both had kids in our laps.  Next comes Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy, who tell you that this night is about looking for “Treasures” that are the Disney characters.   First we have a big, fun number with the entire cast of “Alice in Wonderland”.   The dancing cards that are hearts one side and clubs on the other are really cool.  And the Queen of Hearts is sufficiently mean.  But, Alice keeps her head and all is well.   The first act ends with a second full cast number that is almost the whole story of Peter Pan.  Captain Hook and Mr Smee are actually really cute bad guys.  The Lost Boys are adorable, Wendy and her brothers and great but Peter Pan steals this number.  He’s an excellent skater and after an epic battle between the pirates and lost boys, he saves the day, but not without the help of a flying (and skating) Tinkerbell.  My kids LOVED this part.  Also, Captain hook gets eaten by the biggest crocodile puppet in history!  Hooray!

Intermission is quick and Act II is all about the Disney Princesses!  (which is good because Samantha kept asking me, “Mama, when are the princesses coming?”)  But before we get our princess fix, we are treated to a visually stunning number from The Lion King.   From the opening with a beautiful set piece depicting “Pride Rock” and Rafiki to the gorgeously skated ending with Simba and Nala to “Can you Feel the Love Tonight”, this was probably my favorite large cast number.  I thought the neatest part was the way they portrayed the stampede in the canyon that results in the death of Mufasa.  It was so cool and incredibly inventive.  I am always so impressed with stuff like that.  It reminded me of the amazing way Animal Kingdom does the “Finding Nemo” show with puppets.  Way cool.

Finally, it is Princess Time!  Mickey and the gang re-appear to tell us that coming up the first feature film that Walt Disney produced and out come 7 cute little guys to give us a quick version of Snow White.  The manage to touch on the whole story in about 8 minutes.  Snow White is another very talented skater and her part with her Prince is very pretty.   The big Act II number is from Aladdin and it’s great!   The Genie is fun, Aladdin rides in on an elephant and the Magic Carpet flies!  Aladdin, just like most of the other leads, is immensely talented.  He does a spin at the end that made my kids squeal and clap.   A  great number.  After that, we were treated to Ariel and Sebastian and some under-the-sea creatures that were fun.  Then a very cute and really beautiful skate with Rapunzel and Flynn.  (she’s my favorite Princess and “I See the Light” is so pretty!)  They even had the floating lanterns.  I loved this one.  Then Tiana and Naveen did a bit to “Dig a Little Deeper” that was upbeat and again, very fun.  (I need better adjectives besides ‘cute’ and ‘fun’…but you get the picture.)  Finally, we see Mickey and company again and then the pinnacle for all the little girls in the house….every Disney princess and her prince!!  I can’t for the life of me remember what they skated to, but it was big and flashy and gave ample time for everyone to skate all over the ice.    Let me put it this way…my daughter pointed to all her favorites that were not featured several times over.   “Mama!  Belle!  Cinderella!  Sleeping Beauty! Mulan!”   She was thrilled.   I should mention that my 4 year old son had a ball, too.  And even my husband was impressed.

A few things to know before you go-

  • Parking at the Bay Center is FREE, but the front fills up fast.  So, if you don’t want to walk up the giant ramp, I’d get there at least 30 minutes early.
  • The Bay Center is so proud of their snacks.  We tell the kids they can pick one thing to share and a drink to share as well.  (after the circus last year) This time it was popcorn.  I think the cotton candy (with the Mickey ears, that frankly I could do without) was $15.  Wha?  Anyway, I make sure the kids eat a decent dinner and stick some goldfish in my purse.
  • Holy Over-Priced Souvenirs, Batman!  My daughter, God bless her, is not one to ask for anything, anywhere. She didn’t even notice the scads of Princess-y, sparkly crap that was $20 and up.  ( I love her slightly more for this particular trait.)   My son whined about getting a sword all night and in fact, we are going to Wal-Mart in the morning to purchase a reasonably priced plastic one.  You’ve been warned.
  • If you have a little girl, by all means let her dress up.  Sam wore her tiara with a sundress, because she doesn’t have a Disney princess costume just yet, but we saw so many girls dressed up.  Very cute.

The shows tomorrow are at 2:00 and 6:00 and then again at 2:00 on Sunday.  Tickets are available here.  Let us know if you go and what you and your kids thought about it.  We always love to hear from our readers.   xoxo Jules

So much to do! How can we fit it all in?

You can tell that summer is on it’s way because the list of things to do on our Weekend Round-Up is getting longer by the week!  I was chatting with my husband and my business partner, Jenn, about all the things that are happening this weekend and wondering how we are going to fit them all in.  Granted, there never seems to be a shortage of things to do in our fair city, but this weekend in particular can be jam-packed with fun, if you so desire.  So I thought it would be fun to draw up an itinerary with everything on our list.  (Y’all know I love to plan!)  So, here it is….our plan for  non-stop fun this weekend.  I’m not saying we are going to have the energy to check everything off the list, but it’s going to be fun trying.

(**Please note that I am not being compensated to attend any or all of these events on behalf of PWK.  These are just the things that I think my Littles will enjoy the most!**)

Friday, April 26-

  •  We are going to start the weekend off in downtown Pensacola at the Grand Opening of the Pensacola MESS Hall.  (MESS stands for Math, Engineering, Science and Stuff)  It will be open it’s regular hours of 1-5pm but the festivities begin @ 3:30.   This is a neat resource for our area and tomorrow’s event requires the regular admission price of $8 pp ages 3&up. But for the Grand Opening, it’s FREE!
  • Then we are going to head on over to the Navarre Fun Fest on Navarre Beach.  We are going to grab Dad for this one and make it a family fun night.   This event is today from 4-10 and Saturday from 10-10.  Parking and admission are FREE and you can enjoy arts and crafts, delicious food, a kid’s play area, entertainment and fireworks!  No coolers or picnic baskets allowed, so we will plan on eating there and supporting Navarre Beach and their Chamber.

Saturday, April 27

  • I love starting the weekends with a visit to our very own Farmer’s Market at Palafox Market.  It’s from 8am-2pm, and the early bird definitely gets the worm here.  I love showing my kids all the wonderful locally grown produce.  There’s also a ton of beautiful handmade things from art to soap to jewelry.  It’s especially wonderful with the weather not too hot and hopefully the rain will hold off.
  • We are going to throw caution to the wind and have dessert first, so next we will go to Cordova Mall and support our Gulf Coast Kid’s House and Pensacola Chocolate Fest!   It’s from 12-3 and tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.  You can purchase them online or at GCKH or Sam’s Club.  There’s also a link on the event website.  The tickets gets you a box to fill with chocolate at each vendor booth and entrance to the kids area.  Yum-O!
  • Next we will head up to Milton for Avalon Bowling Center’s Open House from 12 noon-10pm.  This is a big family friendly event with FREE bowling (one game), Food & Drink specials, and a Fish Fry and Sausage @3.   This should be fun for everyone.
  • After heading home and collapsing into a food coma, I’m getting some girlfriends together to go and see Pensacola Little Theater’s production of “Momologues”  This promises to be a great show full of laughter about everything that comes with being a Mom.

Sunday, April 28

  • After church, we are going to take the kids to pick strawberries up at Akers of Strawberries in Baker.  It’s about an hour from us, maybe 45 from Pensacola.  The kids have been talking about this all week, so even though I’m pretty sure we are going to be wiped out, we are going to go.  They are open from 12-4 on Sundays.  Look for a special feature about this outing next week.  There are about 6 weeks of berry picking season left and blueberry season is coming in May and June.

What are your plans for this weekend?  Do you think that I’ve lost my mind with this jam packed schedule?!? I’m exhausted just typing it!  Whew!    We’d love to hear from you! xoxo Jules

Learning Time – Activities to do with your Preschooler at Home

This year, my youngest child is in Kindergarten but two years ago, she missed the cut-off for VPK because of her age.  We are always learning new things but I wanted a more structured learning environment.  We spent about 15 to 20 minutes each day learning new things by studying the letters of the alphabet and I shared those activities here.  When Little S was in VPK last year, I recycled the activities and posted them weekly.  This year, though, we are in school full-time and I am focusing on some other things but I wanted to share those activities with you.

I set the activities up so that we would cover one letter each week with some holiday weeks in between.  If you click the links below it will take you to a loose plan.  If you find a link that no longer works, please let me know.

Happy Learning!

Mark Your Calendar for the 2012 Sales Tax Holidays

It is almost time for the sales tax holiday.  Do you brave the crowds to save the money on school clothes and supplies?  I haven’t in the past, but we are definitely going to this year.

Alabama “Back to School” Sales Tax Holiday – August 3-5th, 2012 – Purchase certain school supplies, computers, and clothing free of state sales or use tax.  See the details of the purchases that will count by following the link.  Also, be sure to confirm that the county you will be shopping in is participating.

Florida Sales Tax Holiday – August 3-5th, 2012 – Purchase clothing, footwear, and certain accessories selling for $75 or less per item, or on certain school supplies selling for $15 or less per item free of Florida sales tax or local option tax.  See the list of tax-exempt and taxable items.

Ideas for Days 1 through 7 of 77 Days of Summer with PWK

A few weeks ago, I shared our 77 Days of Summer with Pensacola with Kids list and mentioned that I would share daily activities that coordinated with the list. I am a little behind but I figured since Santa Rosa County just let out the other day that is okay. I will double up on some days in the middle of the summer to catch up so we get all 77 days taken care of before Escambia County goes back to school.

Day One – Create a summer journal (#1 in the first column of the 77 Days list).

We didn’t get very creative with our summer journal. I just grabbed two spiral notebooks leftover from the school year. I wrote their names on the front and they are going to decorate them with stickers from our summer adventures. My goal is to have them write at least three entries each week. My 7yo will write a paragraph and draw a picture to go with it. My 5yo will draw a picture and I will write sentences that she dictates. We will add any brochures, tickets, or pictures that we collect along the way.

Day Two – Go blueberry picking (#21 in the first column of the 77 Days list).

Blueberry picking season is going to be nearing the end in the next month or so. Head to your favorite blueberry farm and pick some berries. Even if you only pick a few pounds, they are cheaper than buying them in the store and it is a fun family activity.

Day Three – Blow bubbles outside (#25 in the second column of the 77 Days list).

Now that the weather has cleared up a little bit, spend some time together outside as a family. I bought a big tea dispenser (the kind with a spigot at the bottom of it) and filled it up with a large jar of bubble solution (the bubbles were $2.49 and the jar was $5). The jar has a permanent home outside next to little cannisters of bubbles. Whenever my kids run out of bubbles in the little cannisters, they can fill them up themselves with the larger jar. I got this idea from Come Together Kids where she also shares some bubble recipes.

Day Four – Go stargazing (#10 in the third column of the 77 days list).

If the weather continues to hold, head out to Pensacola Beach on June 15th and join the Escambia Amateur Astronomers Association. They will be hosting a stargazing event at Ft. Pickens Battery Worth Picnic Area from sundown until 10pm. You can also head out on your own. A few weeks ago, we downloaded the Google Sky app and used our phones to locate constellations and planets while we waited for the Blue Wahoos fireworks to begin. It was a great way to waste away the time while we waited.

Day Five – Watch a free movie (#5 in the first column of the 77 days list).

The free movies are in full swing! There are a number of free movie offerings at many of the theaters around town:

Day Six – Visit a state park (#6 in the second column of the 77 days list).

I don’t know about you but after being inside all week, I am ready to go for a walk. We have a number of state parks in our area. Call ahead to see if they have sustained any damage from the flash floods.

Day Seven – Donate to the Wildlife Sanctuary (#5 in the third column of the 77 Days list).

In the 77 Day list, I have Bring supplies to the Wildlife Sanctuary and learn more about the animals. Unfortunately, the floods from a few days ago have devastated their buildings. According to their FB page, they are currently without power, phones, Internet, or dry storage. If you are willing to donate, they are asking for giftcards for supplies and groceries or monetary donations so that they may buy things as they need them. You won’t be able to learn about the animals but you can still help out. See their FB page for more information.

77 Days of Summer with Pensacola with Kids

School is almost out for Escambia County and Santa Rosa County is only a week behind Escambia. I can’t believe it is already summer yet, at the same time, it feels like summer has taken forever to get here!

We have 11 weeks of summer and that is a lot of time to fill. My children helped me create this list of 77 things to do this summer. Last year’s list had 55 things, but I decided to fill in the weekends so you had more activity choices. Some of the activities will look familiar but it is easy to put a different spin on them.

The list includes adventures around town, things you can do at home, and day trips. Many of the activities are free or just cost a few dollars. Even if you will be traveling or the kids will be in summer camps, many of these activities can be done on the weekends or during an evening together as a family.

Each week, I will highlight seven of the activities from this list and share ideas, recipes and more to help you make the most of your summer with your family. I will also be bringing back our Summer Road Trip Celebration to share things to do in locations that are less than a day’s drive away (first up is Chattanooga!).

There are three ways to print this list: 1) The easiest way to print out the list is to click on this 77 Days of Summer link. It will open a window with the link. Click on the second link and it will open the list in PDF format.  Print.  2) Click on the photo below.  It will open a window with another photo.  Click again and print.  3) Print this post.
